Townsville Connection Road, Stage 2 & 4

This project delivered a four lane duplication of Stuart Drive, signalisation of three major intersections and duplication of the Bowen Road Bridge across Ross River, one of only three local road links connecting the Bruce Highway and Flinders Highway to the Townsville CBD, carrying more than 24,000 vehicles daily. NQ Project Partners provided embedded engineering and project management support to the ASJV Joint Venture, working alongside BecksWise Civil, delivering for the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Traffic modelling during the bid phase showed a standard single lane arrangement would add over 300 seconds to travel times and wouldn't meet MRTS02.1 conformance, confirming the need for a staged approach across five construction packages, all while keeping a live river crossing and major intersections operational throughout.

Our role was translating the tendered staging concept into a buildable, day to day outcome, adjusting the plan to real site conditions as construction progressed, including developing recovery programs and alternative design solutions when weather impacts forced program resequencing.

We kept traffic within the existing main road network throughout construction, avoiding diversion onto local streets, and maintained the corridor's five package staging structure through to completion. At peak, we had six embedded resources onsite covering pavements, earthworks, traffic signals, drainage and concrete.
